Our Island Story, H.E. Marshall - Chapter 11

"The Story of How the Giant's Dance was Brought to Brittain"

"Many, many hundreds of years ago, the Britons were much troubled by invaders. There was war and unrest in the land, and the people were very unhappy. Then the wise King Aurelius decided to build a great monument in memory of the brave men who had fallen in battle.

He called together all the great lords and wise men, and asked them what kind of monument they thought would be best. Some said one thing and some another, but at last the King turned to Merlin, who was the wisest man of all. 'What do you advise?' asked the King.

Merlin did not answer at once. He thought deeply for a while, and then he said, 'Send for the Giant's Dance.'"
