"St. Alban was the first British martyr. He lived in a time when Christians were cruelly persecuted. Although not a Christian himself, Alban sheltered a Christian priest who was fleeing from his enemies. Moved by the priest’s faith, Alban converted to Christianity. When soldiers came to arrest the priest, Alban exchanged clothes with him and was taken prisoner instead. He was offered his life if he would renounce his new faith, but Alban refused and was beheaded, dying for his belief."
