"Vortigern, the British King, trusted Hengist, the Saxon chief, and allowed him to bring more and more of his warriors into Britain. But Hengist had treachery in his heart. He wanted not only to help Vortigern, but to become king himself.
One day, Hengist invited Vortigern and his nobles to a great feast. The Britons came, unarmed and unsuspecting, and sat down to the banquet. But when the feast was at its height, Hengist gave a signal, and suddenly the Saxons drew out long knives, which they had hidden beneath their cloaks. They fell upon the unarmed Britons, and slew them all except Vortigern, who was taken prisoner."
